Punctuation Playtime® Goes to China

At the Great Wall

The Great Wall
Many people have told us to take a hike, so we did — on THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA! We made it up to the third guard tower before we decided to call it a walk and head on back for some tasty hot chocolate at a store where you can get The Certificate For Climbing Up The Great Wall.

In Tiananmen Square

Tiananmen Square
With Mao Tse-Tung nodding approvingly, Punctuation Playtime visited Tiananmen Square in the People’s Republic of China, spreading our brand of literacy to the Far East. Moments after this photo was taken, Jeff and Norma (Mr. and Mrs. Punctuation) almost got arrested by Beijing policemen, who thought we might be protesting something. Apparently that’s not a safe thing to do in Tiananmen Square. Who knew? Our Chinese guide had to explain to the police that we were teachers, not protesters, and that our banner did not denounce the government. It was a quite-exciting few minutes.

Little Kids

Little Kids
School children may visit the Forbidden City for free on Tuesdays, but they charged us anyway. Here we are with a group of Chinese elementary school students in one of the many courtyards of the 9,999-room palace that housed 24 of China’s emperors from the Ming and Qing dynasties for 500 years, ending in 1911.

Lingyin Temple

Lingyin Temple
There’s nothing like a well-placed comma. Here’s a correctly punctuated sign at the Lingyin Temple in Hangzhou, in southern China, near Shanghai.
